February is Children's Dental Health Month, but dental health is important all year round. Children learn by watching their parents, and there are some simple ways you can help your kids avoid cavities and learn good habits for healthy teeth. Here are ways to help children keep their teeth clean.

  • Brush teeth twice a day.
  • Use a soft-bristle toothbrush.
  • Brush all the parts of their teeth including their gums.
  • Brush for two minutes – about the time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice.
  • Floss once a day.

How much toothpaste should children use? According to dentists, it depends on how old they are.

  • Age three and up: a dab the size of a pea.
  • Under three: a dab the size of a grain of rice.

In addition to practicing healthy habits, it’s important for children to have a dental checkup twice a year. As a parent, you can reach out to your child’s dentist if you have questions or concerns.
